CPSIA Information

What is CPSIA?

CPSIA == Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act.

It is a law that was passed in August of 2008 in order to keep lead and other harmful agents out of items intended for children 12 and under. As of February 10th, 2009, this law will mandate lead testing of all items intended for children and pthalate testing of all items used for the care and feeding of children.

What does this mean for Nappy Shoppe?

Nappy Shoppe supports the idea of protecting our children from harmful products, however the way this law is currently written, the testing process required by businesses is impractical.  Even if a product is inherantly free of the items, a business still has to test.  And after August 2009, end unit testing will be required.  This means even if all the raw materials used to make an item are CERTIFIED as free of the harmful agents, the items will still have to be tested.  This cost will sadly be passed on to the consumer.  And in some cases the cost will be too much for the item.  Especially if the item is a custom one of a kind.  This means there will be less choices for you the consumer on the market as many businesses will be forced to cut the number of products they can offer, or worse yet they will be forced to close their businesses.

Until August 2009, the CPSIA requires that a business provides "reasonable assurance" that a product is lead free.  Nappy Shoppe products do not contain lead.  Where possible, we provide documentation for lead-free status of the raw materials in our products.

Companies that we purchase products wholesale from have also been working towards providing certifications of the lead free status of their products.
