But how often are you doing this? This seems like a lot of extra time and effort that I just don’t have. It just doesn’t seem practical. Your thoughts??
My daughter has had 4 rashes now, and I have done everything mentioned here to clear the yeast from the diapers except bleaching (and microwaving). I’m at a loss as to why it comes back every time. We also stopped giving her juice. She recently stopped breastfeeding just after she hit 18 mos, I wonder if that has thrown her bacteria out of whack… This time we are going to wait until the rash has been clear for a week and we are going to bleach the diapers in addition to doing all the stuff you have mentioned here (which is what we have done in the past). What do you think of spraying the diapers with vinegar just before we put them in the wet bag after she has soiled them? We are just so frustrated! I love using cloth, but the yeast ALWAYS comes back with in the first 3-4 days after switching back to cloth. :(
Jesyka, I’m so sorry it’s not working! Yes, vinegar is good for killing yeast…I also always spray Bac-out immediately on soiled diapers, although I don’t think that would help much with yeast. The only other suggestion I have is to give your daughter probiotics as well…even just making yoghurt a regular part of her diet may help. Also, what kind of diapers are you using? Sometimes babies are sensitive to certain fabrics, and while that wouldn’t cause the yeast rash exactly, it could aggravate it. Have you tried using cloth with a liner to see if that works better for her? Were you able to sun your diapers for a full day?–I would definitely try that along with the bleach. Also, are you using a cloth-diaper-safe barrier cream when you switch back to cloth? Try that too if you’re not…I usually don’t use any creams with cloth diapers but some babies are really sensitive to any moisture on their skin for any length of time, even if you’re changing right away after every pee.
Please let us know if you’re able to get rid of the problem and how you do it!
Jayme: I’ve never needed to do this full protocol, although I’ve had friends do most of it. Usually it only takes once! It’s definitely not something you need to do for regular maintenance–it’s more of a last-ditch effort when you have a recurring problem.
how much vinegar?
